Tuesday, July 30, 7 p.m., Church Sanctuary;
Dr. Karl Campbell, Professor of History, ASU, and Jackie Rullman, 2023 ASU Graduate, will present “Divided America: History, Stories, and Music of the 1960s.” Few decades evoke stronger emotions, and opinions, than the 1960s. It was a time during which many Americans feared that the traditional American consensus was breaking apart. Civil rights, Vietnam, feminism, student protests, assassinations, riots, and a counterculture of “drugs, sex, and rock and roll” all contributed to divisions in our politics, our churches, and our families. Dr. Karl Campbell will provide an overview of the 60s and share some stories and historical interpretations. Jackie Rullman will sing and analyze some of the iconic songs from this troubled decade. Together they will suggest ways in which the 1960s continues to impact American society today.
Sunday, August 25, 11 a.m., Church Sanctuary - Ulysses Long returns to lead our congregation along with Pastor Kathy in a Service of Music and Readings.
New CPC Wednesday Bible Study begins August 18, 3 p.m., and continues August 21, August 28, and September 4. Barbara Stuart, a seasoned Bible study leader, will be leading this study using the book, Making Sense of the Bible: Rediscovering the Power of Scripture Today, written by Adam Hamilton. This book is for those who love the Bible and look to it to help them find meaning and purpose for their lives; it is also a study for people who are willing to wrestle with portions of the Bible about which they have questions; and it is a study for people who are largely unfamiliar with the Bible but who are curious and want to know more! Adam Hamilton envisions the book as a conversation on his back porch, with each participant enjoying a glass of iced tea. The conversation is an attempt to wrestle honestly with the tough questions often raised by thoughtful Christians and non-Christians concerning things taught in the Bible. The book is divided into two parts. The first part addresses some foundational questions: What is the Bible exactly? In what sense is the Bible God’s word and in what sense is it human reflections on God? What do we mean when we say “inspired?” Why did some books make it into the Bible and others were left out? The second section digs into troubling questions and issues, such as historical accuracy, violence, and end times. The book ends by looking at various ways to read the Bible, with the aim being to hear God speak through its pages and find its words to be life changing and life giving. If you would like to participate in this Bible Study, please email Pastor Kathy:
“Growing Deeper in Faith, Reaching Out in Love” - Mission Statement of Crossnore Presbyterian Church
Please join us for worship every Sunday morning at 11 a.m. in our historic rock sanctuary. We are a very warm and welcoming congregation and delight with each new person who comes through the door. There are no strangers here. We praise God with a mixture of traditional and contemporary hymns and songs. The service is fresh, relevant, and engaging, and leaves one with an inspiring message and mission to take into the week. Coffee Hour in the fellowship hall after worship provides an opportunity for newcomers to get to know some of the members of the church family. For more information, please contact the church office, at 828-733-1939.
If there is inclement weather, we will post the cancellation of in-person worship on the website, Facebook, and the church office phone message. When we are not able to meet in person, Pastor Kathy records her sermon on Zoom and sends it out along with the bulletin and music links.
