Tim shares the following description: New Testament stories and texts, formed in the first and second centuries AD, assume shared cultural contexts with their earliest audiences. These contexts often differ significantly from our modern views, and the difference can interfere with our understanding of scripture. What were common ethical viewpoints circulating at that time? What role did polytheism play, and what other religions competed with Christianity? How did governmental authority figure in? What other literature were people hearing and reading? Join me as we consider some of these questions and discover how New Testament backgrounds can enrich our comprehension of its message.” Tim will be using “The Greco-Roman World of the New Testament” by James S. Jeffers (Intervarsity Press: Downers Grove, IL). Please contact the church office to reserve a copy- $10 each: 828-733-1939,.

This Weeks’s Roof Construction Update: . The pews in the sanctuary have been moved in order for the inside scaffolding and supports to be erected. Inside scaffolding has been built and addition scaffolding is being delivered. It is great to see the progress. While preparing to erect the inside scaffolding in the sanctuary, some of the flooring had to be taken up. Between the top flooring and the rough underfloor, some cut up remnants of a children’s periodical called “The Water Lily” were found. The publication date is May 1926. (The first service in our sanctuary was in the summer of 1926). “The Water Lily” was published monthly by the National Temperance Society and was a four-page publication for Sunday schools. We’ve managed to piece together the first and second pages. I’m including them as a page 2 and page 3 in case you want to take a look.
