Dear Friends,

I am writing you from Chapel Hill where Karl, Sadie, and I took refuge from the hurricane after spending four days without water, electricity, cell service, and internet access. Our house escaped any major damage but many of our friends and neighbors have suffered major impacts from flooding and downed trees. Our church has a tree down on the corner of the fellowship hall roof but it doesn’t seem too bad. The Memorial Garden is a mess. It may be a long time until folks in the mountains can communicate with the outside world. All of the surrounding communities have experienced catastrophic damage. Many roads are closed. We are only beginning to come to grips with the challenges we will face in the days, weeks, and months ahead. But neighbors have pulled together and we’ve been checking on members of our community.

There is no telling when we will be able to gather together again at the church, and after Karl and I return to the mountains in a few days the messages from me may be infrequent. I am communicating with the non profits in our county and we will be raising money for local hurricane relief but it’s still too early to know exactly how we can help. Search and rescue missions are still going on now. So think about what you might be able to contribute in the near future, pray for those in harms way and the heroes working to help them, and for now please don’t plan to travel to the mountains. Our time to extend a helping hand will come soon.
Be safe.
